Summit Natural Gas of Missouri is required to offer eligible residential customers the option to opt out of the use of advanced metering equipment. If you prefer a traditional meter at your home, you can request one through this program.
Read the information below to understand how the program works, what it costs, and what to expect. To join the program, log in to your online account and complete the Opt-Out Acknowledgement Form to get started.
Summit uses advanced meters and hub meters to read your natural gas usage. These meters transmit usage data wirelessly, allow two-way communication, and, in some cases, can interact with connected home devices.
A traditional meter does not transmit data wirelessly. It can be read only in person by a company employee or, if you choose, by you. This program gives eligible residential customers the option to switch to a traditional meter.
This program is available to residential customers in Summit’s service areas. Your request may not be approved if you have:
There are two fees associated with this program:
Exception: The one-time $125 fee does not apply if you are a new customer requesting an opt-out before any metering equipment has been installed at your address.
In most cases, the physical meter remains at your home. What gets removed is the advanced metering equipment — the component that sends data wirelessly. A company employee will then read your meter in person on a regular basis.
Your meter will be placed outside your home when possible, typically within five feet of the structure, and in the same location as your current meter or a nearby location that allows easy access.
Once we receive your completed and signed Opt-Out Acknowledgement Form, the one-time $125 fee, and confirmed access to your meter, we will complete the meter change within approximately 30 days. If additional time is needed, we will contact you with the next available date.
To complete and maintain your opt-out, our team will need ongoing access to your meter for:
If access is unavailable, we may not be able to complete or continue your opt-out.
If you opt out, you may also request to self-read your meter each month. Here’s how it works:
Important: If you miss two (2) consecutive months or any three (3) months in a rolling 12-month period, we may end your self-read arrangement and return to standard monthly reads.
The company may also assess 5% interest on unpaid amounts that result from failure to report or inaccurate reporting.
Once we receive your completed form and payment:
